If you do not have the finances to learn from a qualified Tai Chi teacher in person or do not have a teacher near where you live. My suggestion would be to learn Qigong/Chi Kung from a book or by watching free YouTube videos online. This is something that I have never been willing to do in the past because most tai chi videos were poor quality or hard to find. Once you have chosen a style, look online or ask your friends and family to help you find a tai chi instructor who is knowledgeable in that style. A good instructor will help show you moves, teach you about the history and philosophy of tai chi, and correct your form during class. I teach you the first few moves from the Long Yang Tai Chi form. What is the best Tai Chi style to learn at home?
A good tai chi outfit will not restrict your movements or cause any discomfort during practice. It's best to choose clothes made from natural fibers, so they don't cling to the skin when wet with sweat. Tai Chi movements are slow and gentle, yet when practiced regularly, they can produce an excellent workout for the entire body. Chen Village is the birthplace of tai chi and Chen style retains more of the original characteristics of tai chi, deeper stances, issuing of power, and martial applications. A fancy studio and a free uniform doesn't mean much if you aren't learning anything.
This makes it easy to do, but difficult to master -- there's a lot of focus on powerful flows of energy and inner, pressured movements. Concentrate on all parts of your body one at a time. Once breathing like this feels normal, start relaxing every part of your body one at a time. Start with your feet and work your way up to your scalp. Get as tiny as you'd like -- down to your fingernails even. You'll find you were holding tension without even realizing it.
Learn at Home
For learning on your own, I do recommend the Yang-style short form. That is the style I practice and I think it is relatively easy to learn the basic forms somewhat easily. You can learn the basic 24 movements of the Tai Chi short form in as little as a month practicing 20 minutes per day 4 or 5 days per week. But it will take a year to really know the form such that you can practice without actively thinking about the next movement. It is easy to learn the specific movements of Tai Chi without taking an in-person class. However, some of the subtle positional nuances, as well as the flow of the chi energy through the body may be harder to master without direct instruction.

Yang style is more focused on balance and health aspects. You are also more likely to find other Yang practitioners to workout with because it is the most common form. Chen style is equal parts health aspects and martial aspects and is therefore a little bit more physically demanding.

I feel that I did not understand the essence of my Tai Chi form until I started learning Push Hands. One important element from a Tai Chi class is that the teacher will ask each student to hold a posture. He or She will walk around the class and make sure each student is executing the posture correctly.
